I lift up my eyes to the hills--where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip--he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD watches over you--the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The LORD will keep you from all harm--he will watch over your life;
the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
This psalm speaks to me when I am in a place of lost hope; it reminds me that I can only put my trust in God. As it says in verse two, “my help comes from the the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth,” which really serves as an essential reminder for me to look to the Almighty LORD when I am anxious and depressed. I’ve needed this reminder several times, and I know that this psalm has truly spoken to how much our God truly cares about us. He never ceases to watch over us, even when we think that He does not see our burdens.
In verse eight, I think it calls us to hear an even more important reminder: “the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” His gaze is on us constantly! He never misses a moment of our life. How incredible is that? The evil in this world comes to attack us and separate us from the LORD, but He will keep each of us from harm because of His great love for us. God, I’m so amazed by You because of how great Your love is for me!
Father, when our hearts are depressed and constrained with anxiety, we come to You. You are our only comfort. Where does our help come from? Only You, O God! We thank You that Your eyes are always upon us watching us wherever we go. We also thank You that we are reminded of Your goodness through these psalms, and I pray that would always be the case. In Jesus’ name, amen.
