Psalm 46
Katie Donohoue
January 15, 2016

1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.

The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.

10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”

11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 46 is more evidence that we can have complete and utter confidence in our mighty God.  We are safe and strong in Him v1. Even if the earth as we know it, is destroyed, we shall not be fearful because our Rock is firm v2-3.  Some commentaries interpret this as spiritual warfare.  I can't help think of "global warning"!  Whether our fears are of a spiritual or physical nature, we need not fear because God is our ever- present help.  Amen.  The river that makes glad the city of God, v4, is His Church, that is His believers.  Look what He does for us!  He is with us always.  He makes us strong. He is our Helper.  He ends warfare of all kinds.  He is our Protection v5-9.
Verse 10 is one of my favorites.  Be still and know that I am God...  What more can we ask?  He WILL be exalted among the nations in all the earth!  Amen!  The psalmist ends with a reminder to us.  This same God is with us now protecting us. Alleluia!

Dear God, thank you for who you are. Please continue to remind us not to worry or fear.  May your perfect will be accomplished! Alleluia!
