Psalm 20
Connor Mott
December 20, 2015

May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;

may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

May he send you help from the sanctuary

and grant you support from Zion.

May he remember all your sacrifices

and accept your burnt offerings.

May he give you the desire of your heart

and make all your plans succeed.

We will shout for joy when you are victorious

and will lift up our banners in the name of our God.

May the LORD grant all your requests.

Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed;

he answers him from his holy heaven

with the saving power of his right hand.

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

They are brought to their knees and fall,

but we rise up and stand firm.

O LORD, save the king!

Answer us when we call!

When I read this psalm, the thing that strikes me the most is reading about David’s trust and confidence in God. David was different from others in that he continually spent time developing his relationship with God. As he says in verse seven, “some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” When I thought about that for some time, it really resonated with me. God is the only One who can answer our deepest cries. He’s the only One who comes to our rescue when life drags us down.

Today, I heard a song on the radio by Kutless called “This is Christmas,” and it seemed to connect in a way to the message of this psalm and the season of Christmas. Basically, the song reminds us that Christmas has no meaning without Christ. At one point the song says, “Have we lost the reason that we celebrate each year?” The truth is, at this time of the year I don’t really spend enough time reminding myself of what Christmas is all about. But I know in my heart that all the other stuff is trivial compared to the God who answers us when we call! In the days to come, remember that God’s eyes watch over you. And He cares deeply enough about you to grant all your requests! “What is Christmas? If there never was a Savior wrapped in a manger.” Right now God, let us remember why we celebrate Christmas and why we can always trust in  You, our LORD and Savior!
